For over a decade, Nike’s ongoing commitment to sustainability has meant 7.5 billion plastic bottles have been diverted from landfills since 2010.
For both Nike’s Fast Fit Vaporknit kits (worn by Brasil, Croatia, England, Nigeria, Poland and Portugal) and Nike’s Match jerseys (worn by Australia, Saudi Arabia and South Korea), the process involves melting down 12 or 18 recycled plastic drinking bottles, respectively, to produce a fine yarn. The bottles are cleaned, shredded into flakes then converted into pellets. From there, the pellets are melted and extruded into the high-quality yarn used to create the kits, delivering peak performance with a lower impact on the environment. We captured the jersey at Swanson Studios. Our goal was to create an upward feel to the jersey as it gets "made" by the swirl of bottles coming from the bottom building and weaving the jersey. The bottles and environments were created in CGI.
We also went beyond the original ask of a still hero image, and took it upon ourselves to make a short video to push the idea and explore storytelling a bit more. Just for fun and because we could.
